Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard star in An Education

Directed by Lone Scherfig and starring Carey Mulligan, Peter Sarsgaard and Alfred Molina, “An Education” is a coming of age story and time capsule that takes us back to early sixties London. Jenny Mellor is a bright and obedient seventeen year old who has put all her energy into getting accepted to Oxford University. But then she meets David Goldman, a cultured and slick dressed man twice her age, who is bent on showing her a more thrilling side of life. Soon enough Jenny’s doubts aren’t only about whether she wants to continue the studious path her father has laid down for her, but also whether David and his friends really are who they seem. Nominated for best actress and best picture in this year’s Oscars, you can catch the film in its original version at Yelmo Cines Ideal and Cines Renoir.

Mel Gibson Stars in the Edge of Darkness

After a seven year acting hiatus Mel Gibson leaves the director’s seat and gets back on the screen with the thriller “Edge of Darkness” (Al Limite), which features him as a worn out and vengeful homicide detective searching for his daughter’s killer. It’s a role that Gibson should fit comfortably in, given that he’s one way or the other played the same part many times before, yet this doesn’t mean the film isn’t worth a try—in any case, it could be refreshing to see the veteran actor back in the action genre. Watch the movie at Cinesa Proyecciones or  in its original version in Yelmo Cines Islazul starting March 1st.

Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” Opens in Madrid

Whenever a new Martin Scorsese film comes out you can almost see a “quality guaranteed” sticker on the poster. So good news: after The Aviator and The Departed he is reuniting with Leonardo DiCaprio for the suspense thriller Shutter Island. DiCaprio plays a self-assured U.S Marshall who slowly begins losing his mind after being sent to investigate the disappearance of an escaped mental patient from an isolated sanatorium. He is joined by seasoned talents Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow in this much awaited thriller that will hopefully combine quality filmmaking with popcorn entertainment. Watch the film in its original language starting next Friday, February 19th, at the excellent Yelmo Cines Ideal.

Madrid Movie Premier

Today, Friday, February 5th, marks the arrival of “The Road and Precious” to the theatres here in Madrid. “The Road” is the highly anticipated film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize winning end-of-world fable that tells the story of a father and his son’s journey across the barren landscape of a decimated United States.  Viggo Mortensen takes the rains as the father who’s determined to protect his son at all costs while fighting to locate some still thriving human population.  Fresh off six Oscar nominations and a win at the Golden Globes, Precious is an Oscar lover’s must-see.  Precious is a gut-wrench inspirational story of a young woman’s struggle to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles and features two amazing performances from Gabourey Sidibe and Mo’Nique.  For locations and show times visit Cines Ideal or Renoir Cines.

The Hurt Locker Arrives in Madrid

January 29th marks the premiere of Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, one of the few American movies based on the Iraq war embraced by the public and critics alike. The film follows the work of an elite bomb squad team that faces deadly surprises everyday—not necessarily a problem for Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner), who gets kicks from risk the way a junky does from a needle. Its success comes partly because of its realistic depiction of U.S soldiers in Iraq and prerogative to create a tense thriller that leaves politics at the door. Original versions will be screened in Cines Ideal and Cines Renoir.

More Original Version Movies Madrid

Coming to your local VO movie houses here in Madrid this Friday, January 29th, will be a double dose of Oscar preview flicks.  Two of today’s greatest actors, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, team up to tell the story of a South African rugby star (Damon) and Nelson Mandela (Morgan) who inspires his country.  The timeless Clint Eastwood directs Invictus, a movie primed to garner several Oscar nods.

If you haven’t already noticed there are two more big-time movies just trickling into theatres here: Up in the Air and Nine. In Up in the Air George Clooney and Vera Farmiga deliver two of the year’s best performances in the story of the highs and lows of corporate culture.  Nine is full of music, music, and more music and features some of Hollywood’s greatest female actresses, including Spain’s own Penelope Cruz.

As always, show times and theatres can be found at Cines Ideal and Renoir Cines.

Version Original Movie Roundup

The big opening in this edition of your MAP English movie preview is the January 15th release of Sherlock Holmes.  The movie gets a serious 21st century update from director Guy Ritchie. Holmes, played by Robert Downey, Jr., is equal parts brain and master of fisticuffs. The movie also stars Jude Law as Sherlock’s partner in crime solving, and Rachel McAdams as his love interest.

Another good bet is the latest from the continually brilliant Cohen Brothers, A Serious Man (Un Tipo Serio), which is a hit amongst fans and critics.

If it’s deeply polarizing political humor you want then the new film by director Michael Moore should be on your list. Capitalism: A Love Story searches for answers from Wall Street and the government about the financial crisis.

The Bad Lieutenant (Teniente Corrupto) is Werner Herzog’s remake of the classic out-of-control cop movie. This time taking the lead is Nick Cage in a performance which should put him in the running for a Best Actor nomination.

A couple more choices include: The visually stunning 9 (Numero 9), which was produced by Tim Burton and bears his characteristic traits, and the grown up romantic comedy It’s Complicated (No es tan facil), starring Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep.

As always, show times and theatres can be found at Cines Ideal and Renoir Cines.
