Circulo de Bellas Artes: Monty Python Film Festival

Led by the likes of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin the Monty Python movies are some of the most loved and hysterical comedies to ever hit the big screen. These cheeky Brits take on all forms of social satire and have created one of the most devout cult fan bases that you will ever find. From May 25th until June 6th the Circulo de Bellas Artes will be presenting all of their films (And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Live at the Hollywood Bowl, The Meaning of Life) in their great film series. For more information click here.

Robin Hood is Ready for His Closeup

One of the oldest and most recurring tales in the Western world—the legend has its origins in the middle ages—gets dressed up 21st century style in Ridley Scotts new film starring Russell Crow and Cate Blanchet. Robin Hood’s evolving presence in cinema is such that it is only surpassed by the image of Sherlock Holmes: he’s been immortalized in the silver screen by Errol Flynn, cartoonized into a Fox by Disney, made a buffoon by Mel Brooks, even interpreted by Kevin Costner. Ridley Scott is known for his work with violent epics and Russell Crow has played more than his share of rough, though, sacrificing heroes, so the film has potential. See if it lives up to it in its original version at Renoir Princesa (click here for tickets) and Cines Yelmo Ideal (click here for tickets).

Two Lovers Premieres in Madrid

Very loosely based on Dostoevsky’s short story White Nights, Two Lovers is at heart a tale about a young man’s inner struggles of choosing between comfortable and easy love and obsessive passion.  The great actor Joaquin Phoenix plays Leonard Kraditor, who moves back in to his old Brooklyn home after a failed suicide attempt. There he meets the mysterious and problematic Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow) as well as the sweet and parent-recommended Sandra (Vinessa Shaw). From there on it’s a serious study into character and love in a film that director James Gray wanted  to be solemn and passionate.   Playing in its original version at cines Yelmo Ideal ( click here for tickets), cines Princesa and cines Retiro (click here for tickets).

Fantastic Mr. Fox: A Different Kind of Animated Movie

Why is Fantastic Mr. Fox different? For one, it’s shot in old fashion stop action. It’s based on a story by Road Dhal, probably the best that children’s literature has to offer. But the movie is also brought to the screen by Wes Anderson, whose movies are known for finding humor in the odd and their meticulous work with set designs. George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Jason Schwartzman lend their voices to the story of a Fox that can’t conform and has an instinct for stealing chickens. Because it’s based off Dhal you know the villains are going to be twisted people. Now playing in its original version at Cines Princesa, click here to buy tickets.

Clive Owen Stars in The Boys Are Back

In ¨The Boys Are Back¨ (Solo Ellos) Clive Owen plays a bereaved father who must raise a household of two kids, one a curios six year old boy and the other a rebellious teen, each in a different stage of youth and with their own conflicts and ambitions. Set in South Australia, the film walks a fine line between drama, comedy, and plain old nostalgia. The film is directed by Scott Hicks and also stars Emma Booth, George MacKay and Laura Fraser.  Enjoy the film in its original language at Yelmo Cine Ideal;  for information on the theatre and tickets click here.

Green Zone Comes to Madrid

Director Paul Greengrass’ new film, Green Zone,  focuses on a military officer who attempts to understand the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Sounds like pretty hefty stuff, but Greengrass—who has directed Matt  Damon before in the Bourne Identity series and who has built up a reputation for creating frenetic tension—is likely to bring a good balance between plot substance and a whole lot of explosions and war action. To say this movie is bound to be very critical of the Bush administration is stating the obvious, but this is no Fahrenheit 9/11—after all, if they put Matt Damon in there it must be because he’s going to throw a few punches.  The movie is playing  at Cines Yelmo Ideal at the Calle del Doctor Cortezo 6.

Now Playing in Madrid: The Book of Eli

Apocalyptic movies seem to be in fashion and the newest one, “The Book of Eli”, comes in the recognizable forms of Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. Eli (Washington) is a lone warrior with a mission—and not just any mission of course, but one that involves mankind’s only hope.  Walking the dry and desolate roads of a destroyed America, Eli must protect his mysterious book from road robbers, psychopaths, weirdoes and all kinds of lawless freaks…Sounds like fun! Catch the film in its original version at Yelmo Cines Ideal.
