Monthly Cult Movie Screenings–For Free!

If the terms cult, B movie and camp value mean anything good to you then the newly revamped Cines Luna will definitely interest you. The recently closed cinema was reopened at the beginning of the year—reportedly by the eclectic arts and culture organizer Pelonio—with the aim of creating a different movie-going experience all together. The plan was to show monthly viewings of movies that, although loved by select but faithful groups, have mostly been left to rot in the infinite basement of forgotten movies. We’re talking about flicks legendary for their weirdness and shunned for their unbelievable bad taste; some too quirky to survive and some so good that they got overlooked.

Horror movies with impressionable teenagers. A reformatory full of sexy, but alas psychotic, girls. A young couple that goes to see a scary movie and find themselves in a theater full of zombies…hey, it’s not surprising when you consider last month’s double feature included the films Brain Damage and Franken-hooker. These and other rare pieces of celluloid are up on the big screen for you to see—not only for free but also with one drink included. So far the monthly double features have been a great success with many people showing up for what’s become a fun, eclectic and rather odd event. It usually happens around the 21st of each month, click here for more information and date confirmations.

Reykjavik-Rotterdam: Icelandic Thriller Comes to Madrid

This thriller comes to us from Iceland with more tension and inteligence than special effects—don’t worry, a remake is currently in the works starring Mark Whalberg. Christopher (Baltasar Kormakur) has lost his job at the dock after getting busted dealing with alcohol contraband (it’s really expensive there, apparently) but must stay in the game to get out of serious money troubles. Reykjavik-Rotterdam is your classic “ it’s my last job and then i’m out” trick, but this one works.  Original subtitled version now playing at Renoir Plaza Espana.

Que Se Mueran Los Feos Comes to the Screen

If the movie’s title is Ugly People Can Just Die then the main characters must be ugly. That’s the way it goes with Eliseo and Nati, the two lonely townies whom destiny may give a second chance at love. Played by screen favorites Javier Camara and Carmen Machi, both serve as a delicious image of all that which standard romantic comedies never include in their reels. Filled with familiar faces if you are familiar with Spanish television, it’s also a film that indulges itself with depicting small rural life as it’s known in Spain. Click here for a full list of theaters and tickets.
