Celebrate Saint Patrick’s at The Irish Rover

Come celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in the best place possible, an Irish pub of course. The Colonials, the band that performed at The Irish Rover’s opening thirteen years ago, has been giving a free Saint Patricks concert every year since. The music is a mix of traditional Irish folk and pop-rock and the atmosphere is joyous to say the least, so mark Thursday March 18th at 23:45 p.m. on your calendar for a night of fast paced tunes and a lot of drinking—hey, we all need to vent sometimes.

Free Music in Madrid

We’ve got different genres playing in diverse venues with one thing in common: the entrance and music are free! So dump the seedy club offers and expensive cover charges, grab your rocking shoes and look no further for an itinerary of live music for the weekend.

Blues – Friday, March 12th: Moe has been the stage for many, many blues and jazz acts in the past decade and doesn’t seem to have any plans of slowing down: Mondays are reserved for the Bob Sands Big Bands, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s are dominated by jam sessions and the rest of the week usually have concerts in store.  The 12th at 22:30 p.m. will be the date of a free concert featuring blues musician Boney Fields. This veteran American has worked with various artists such as Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, don’t miss him!

Classic Rock – Saturday, March 13th: Straight up classic rock will be the sound coming out of the long running Segundo Jazz club starting at 24:00 a.m. Saturday night. The Beat Beat Yeah is a new tribute band that mostly dips into The Beatles repertoire, but also meddles with The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and other rock bands that transformed popular music forever in the sixties and seventies. So come have a few drinks with friends and sing songs you already know and love, with no cover charge.

Jazz – Sunday, March 14th: End the weekend with some good and smooth jazz with Marta Sanchez’s Jazz Jam, playing at El Plaza starting at 22:00 p.m.  Pianist Sanchez will be accompanied by her band of sax, base and drum players, who have together been touring the Madrid Jazz circuit for the last couple of years: look for samples of their great songs here.

March Concerts in Madrid

With the changing of the calendar (and hopefully the weather) the month of March brings with it the continuation of a great year for live music here in Madrid.  Check out your Concert MAP for the month of March and get your tickets before it’s too late.

Christina Rosenvinge + Tulsa 3/2 – El Sol:  The Heineken Music Selector series brings together two of the biggest names in Spanish folk-rock for a can’t miss event.

Josh Rouse 3/4 – Joy:  Rouse is an American folk singer who has been living in Spain for a few years and his work here includes collaborations with Spanish musician Paz Suay as well as his most recent release, El Turista.

La Roux 3/12 – La Riviera:  This British electro-pop duo brings their infectious brand of dance tunes to the stage following the success of their self-titled debut album.

The Cranberries 3/12 – Palacio Vistalegre:  One of the great alt-rock bands of the 90s has recently embarked on a Reunion tour and Madrid is lucky enough to be one of the stops.

Yo La Tengo 3/13 – La Riviera:  The remarkable consistency of this long time member of the indie rock scene is once again shown on their twelfth album, Popular Songs.  The group continues to change and stay the same in just the right balance, giving their music both a familiarity and freshness we’ve come to expect.

Florence + The Machine 3/15 – Sala Heineken: The lovely Florence Welsh comes to Madrid on the heels of a hailstorm of critical and commercial success.  BAD NEWS ALERT:  The concert has already sold out online so you will need to look for alternate methods if you want to see this show.

Yeasayer 3/17 – Sala Caracol (changed from Moby Dick): This dynamic group from Brooklyn is back with some more of their patented brand of psych-pop that translates into great live shows.  This is one that might sell out fast so grab your tickets soon.

Haiti Benefit Concert 3/24 Teatro Circo Price:  Don’t miss another chance to listen to great music and support a needy cause as Intermón-Oxfam present their third concert aiding the reconstruction efforts in Haiti.  A lot of great local talent will be present including the likes of Ariel Rot, The Sunday Drivers and Christina Rosenvinge.

Lacrosse 3/27 – Circulo de Bellas Artes:  CBA’s concert series Frontera Círculo IV presents this Swiss-pop groups brand of fun and lively tunes as they tour in support of their second album, Bandages for the Heart.

The Hidden Cameras 3/28 – Moby Dick:  Join this Canadian pop group as they bring one of their highly regarded live shows to Madrid.

Though there are live shows every night of the week, these are some of the highlights that should be on your radar.

Madrid Weekend Guide: Funk and Jazz

How about a funky weekend? We’ve looked into Madrid’s overzealous list of bars, cafes, clubs (even raggedy taverns) to pick out three fresh slices of funky jazz for the week’s three busiest nights—all taking place around the city center!

Start the weekend on Thursday the 18th at El Despertar with the excellent guitarist Nacho Perez and his group. The band’s style leans more towards the jazzy than the funky and 3 euros is a small price to pay to watch these musicians. They are obviously influenced by household names like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans, and emulate their smooth sound while mixing in upbeat tunes. Like the music, the bar itself emulates the jazzy atmosphere of the forty’s and fifties—not a bad place to have good music, cold beer and a cigarette at hand (the show begins as 21 p.m.).

Now it’s time for more funk and less Monk, and El Junco is just the place for those keen on buoyant music and excessive drinking. A place usually dedicated to jazz and blues, El Junco always prioritizes music so that when no jam sessions are around a well versed DJ is sure to be present.  On this occasion the band Watch Out will be playing away to a jumping crowd and spitting out funk music using elements from jazz, rock, ska and even soul. The live music starts at 23 p.m. and the cover charge is 6 euros.

Ah, yes, Saturday night. Tomorrow’s the time for resting, catching up on work, regretting those things you said the nights before—but until then, flock to Café La Palma for another dose of great live and funky music! Las Hermanas Sister will be offering up their own brand of funk and alternative music, featuring the lovely voice of Anita Rowe. The café is not too shabby at all, offering an extensive bar and just the right lighting for putting on lively music shows. This show begins at 22 p.m. with a 9 euro entrance.

Overkill at Sala Heineken on February 21st

Metal heads rejoice! Veteran New Jersey rockers Overkill are coming for a concert on Sunday the 21st of this month. Formed in 1984, the band has since then stayed true to playing very loud music: think of it as a mix of trash metal—the fast tempo and aggressive riff approach characterized best by Metallica—with Iron Maiden style metal. The concert will take place in the acoustically blessed Sala Heineken, a venue used to the coming and going of international rock bands. Tickets are 23 Euros; to find out more about the band go to their website and to purchase tickets for February 21st go here.
