Getting Around

Transportation in Madrid is efficient, clean, and easy. Check out our overview below of the Madrid airport, trains, buses, cars, private chauffeurs, taxis, shuttles, and more. If you are planning a Spain-wide trip, you might want to consider getting a Spain Rail Pass. If your doing some heavy travelling, you can also check out an all-Europe train pass.
If you are looking for non-traditional ways of getting around Madrid, try a segway or bike rental!

Car Rentals in Madrid. Holiday Cars is a one-stop solution to get price quotes from car rental providers throughout Spain. >>>Go to Holiday Cars Car Rental Web site.

Madrid Barajas Airport. Information: 902 35 35 70. This international airport offers direct flights to many of the world’s main cities. >>>check current flight status for Arrivals & Departures

Metro Madrid. This is Madrid’s simple, safe, and color-coded undeground subway system. We’ve even heard New Yorkers who don’t speak a word of Spanish tell us that tthe Metro Madrid is easier to use than the subway in New York! You can take the Metro Madrid straight from Madrid Barajas Airport to the center of town. >>>download a map of the Madrid Metro

Atocha Train Station. This is your launching for taking trains all over Spain and Europe. The Ave, a new high-speed train, is great for day trips to Toledo. >>>get a Spain Rail Pass

Private Chauffeurs. English-speaking chauffers can pick you at your disposal and take you around the city. >>>get a private chauffeur in Madrid

Taxis. Call for a Taxi in Madrid: +34 91 405 1213 . There are zillions of taxis at the airport and all over Madrid. Spanish taxi drivers are friendly, honest, and love to help you practice your Spanish. The old timers never need maps, while the younger ones are fully equipped with GPS. A government initiative to teach taxi drivers English has recently started, showing how very cosmopolitan the Spanish capital is becoming. If you need to call for a taxi on the phone, keep in mind that they start charging from the moment you call. Make sure you wait for the taxi you’ve requested if you are called from a friends apartment or mobile phone–they’ve got your number saved and if you ditch one of their guys, good luck getting a taxi in the future!

Intercity buses. You can download various bus routes in Spanish, or download this special airport to city-center bus map in English

Regional buses. City destinations are followed by the bus companies that serve them. Check out our guide to regional buses in Spain.
