Rock and Roll at Sala Barracudas

If you were to enter Sala Barracudas on an empty night, you’d find yourself coming into a moderately sized room dressed in slick black and brimming with all kinds of rock posters imaginable. We’re not talking about sloppily pasted pictures, but meticulously arranged art protected by a thin wall of glass from which Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Metallica, Frank Zappa and hundreds of other performers stand suspended in time. If rock and roll can be thought of as a religion, then surely this is one of its shrines. Parallel to these walls you’d see a well equipped bar that stands in front of the DJ’s table and a mellow barman—though the music can be anything but relaxed. In between these there’s a space with a few chairs and tables (well, empty kegs posing as tables) and towards the far end of the room a small stage and would be mini mosh pit.

Now imagine this place on a Friday night, chock full of loud, happy and drunk people and a hardcore band providing the music and you get the idea of what Barracudas is about.  Sounds good if this is your kind of place, but it gets better: down the stairs on the way to the bathroom you’ll find a smaller room that is also incredibly decorated and perfect for escaping the potentially explosive atmosphere of upstairs. Here, an old school and well kept pool table is ready for your enjoyment, though unfortunately the games don’t come cheap (2 euros per round).

Named after the late seventies English rock band with the same name, Barracudas opened its doors seven years ago and has since garnered a reputation for being a place that puts music first. As a result, it has become well known to local bands and people involved with music—it´s not rare for the barman to also be the sound engineer, or for the band playing that night to include ex employees of the bar. Although “big acts” don’t pass by Barracudas, it does get a steady stream of bands from places all over Europe like Germany, France and Hungary. Concerts generally take place from Thursdays to Saturdays and sometimes Wednesdays.  Click here to go to the bar’s website and check out latest news, pics and upcoming concerts.
