The Hallowed ground of Humungous Tapas

Just when you thought tapas couldn’t get any bigger, any cheaper or any yummier… We bring you – Restaurante Boñar de Leon.

Intersecting Calle San Bernardo at about number 40, you’ll find a pleasant little alley, devoid of cars and lined with cafe tables. This open-air patch of street functions as the dining room – the actual restaurant is at the end of the alley where it dead ends into a larger street.

These grounds should be considered sacred by the impoverished, hardworking multitudes – especially if they are cursed with fast metabolisms and are eternally hungry. For it is here that your three-euro caña (technically it is a jara – a little bigger) will be accompanied by a gloriously generous plate of paella, cocido, chicken wings or other Spanish dishes.

Upon seeing these gargantuan tapas you might logically ask, “If this is a tapa, what does an actual meal look like?”

An intriguing question – to find the answer, stop by on any Monday. Mondays are “Cocido Days” at Boñar de Leon and they are wagering that you cannot eat an entire portion. In fact, they are so sure that they will send you on an all-expense-paid trip to the Canaries if you can. Like I say, “Sacred Ground”.

And if that isn’t enough, there’s more. Perhaps you aren’t interested in joining the eating contest, but you’d like a meal. Let’s further say that you and your crew are a little strapped for cash. The generous folks at Boñar have taken this into account. A small sentence at the top of the menu “Nos ajustamos a tu presupuesto” (we adjust to your budget) means if your group of friends has only 25 euros between them, the clever waiters will find a way to maximize your money by brining you the most food possible. For God’s sake, man, does your own mother treat you this well?!

You have to experience it to believe it. Good luck if you are going to try to eat your way to the Canary Islands.
